The process of taking a 2 dimensional image and placing it in a 3 dimensional space is known as 2.5 dimensional animation (2.5D). Through a mix of Photoshop and After Effects virtual cameras, I take 2D spaces and bring them to life. It is all trickery of the mind through a phenomenon known as the Parallax effect. In theory, the closer you are to an object, the greater the movements of objects will appear when you physically move -- objects far away appear to move very little. Here are some examples of flat images after I have added a little depth.
